چکیده

Lead isotopic ratios of cassiterite, the dominant tin ore, evolve after crystallization through decay of uranium and thorium to lead. We show that the lead isotopic ratios of smelted tin at Rooiberg, South Africa, form an isochron that matches the known geological age of the Rooiberg cassiterite deposits. Since the lead isotopic ratios of several prehistoric tin and bronze artifacts throughout southern Africa also fall on this isochron, we deduce that they were made with tin from the Rooiberg deposits. Implications of this approach for provenance studies of early tin and bronze in Eurasia are also examined.

Bronze Age gold in Southern Georgia

This study represents a joint pilot project between archaeological and natural sciences, aimed at exploring the technology and provenance of gold artefacts, exemplified for the case of Georgia. It is focussed on the prehistoric gold mine of Sakdrisi. The study included the investigation of both Bronze Age gold artefacts and native gold by chemical and lead isotope analyses using ICP-mass spectr...

Copper and tin isotopic analysis of ancient bronzes for archaeological investigation: development and validation of a suitable analytical methodology.

Although in many cases Pb isotopic analysis can be relied on for provenance determination of ancient bronzes, sometimes the use of "non-traditional" isotopic systems, such as those of Cu and Sn, is required. The work reported on in this paper aimed at revising the methodology for Cu and Sn isotope ratio measurements in archaeological bronzes via optimization of the analytical procedures in term...

Preliminary Archaeometallurgical Investigations of Bronze Age Metal Finds from Shahdad and Tepe Yahya

Shahdad and Yahya which are two important prehistoric sites in the Kerman Province, are of most important forArchaeometallurgical studies. During excavations at these sites a number of metal objects have been discovered. Moreover, evidence of metal working on the surface testify to manifacturing of metal objects. This also shows that thesite might have experienced craft specialization. The follow...

بررسی روند تشکیل ترکیبات اکسیدی در آثار برنزی با استناد به مطالعات میکروسکوپی

Due to the complex corrosion mechanism of the bronze objects, explaining the structure of different layers of corrosion in these objects at microscopic levels is possible. Typically copper oxide(I) is the first corrosion layer on surface of bronze objects that are excavated of historical sites. However, depending on the environmental conditions، various forms of corrosion layer of tin or copper...

A Novel Design for Production of Efficient Flexible Lead-Free Shields against X-ray Photons in Diagnostic Energy Range

Background: Lead-based radiation shields are widely used in radiology departments to protect both workers and patients from any unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation. Recently there has been a great deal of concern expressed about the toxicity of lead. Human lead toxicity is well documented. In that light, production of environmentally-friendly lead-free radiation shields with less weight ...
